National Alert System Coming to Mobile Phones
Sources: KENDRA SRIVASTAVA, Mobiledia A national emergency alert system will soon begin texting people about impending disasters, as government policies adapt to technology. The Federal Communications Commission today announced it will roll out the Personal Localized Alerting Network (PLAN) in Washington and New York by the end of the year. Texts from the President, alarms for natural disasters and even messages about missing children will appear on smartphones across the country, which will need special chips to receive the service. Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint have volunteered to participate in PLAN so far, with other carriers expected to join soon. The infrequent alerts are free to customers across the nation and will contain no more than 90 characters to minimize the information flood. Full Story: http://www.mobiledia.com/news/89737.html |
