MIDDLETOWN
Farmers market planned downtown

MIDDLETOWN — A downtown business owner says Middletown is ready for a farmers market and intends to launch it by the First Friday event in June.
Deborah Rumford, co-owner with her husband Don of The Music Store and Rumford Productions, wants to bring farmers and artisans to the former Swallen’s lot — which is located behind the Pendleton Art Center and TV Middletown — every Saturday until October and during the First Friday events.
“I think Middletown is ready for this,” Rumford said. “I know there is a demand for this.”
This idea was presented to her in March and she’s been working to make it happen since then, though she admits launching it by June 7 “is a pretty ambitious undertaking.” If the every Saturday goal isn’t possible, Rumford said she would like to have it at least every First Friday from June through October, which guarantees farmers an audience as hundreds of people who descend upon Broad Street and Central Avenue.

THIS IS NOT A NEW EVENT. THERE WAS A FARMERS MARKET DOWNTOWN WHERE THE BUS STATION IS, I BELIEVE, A DECADE OR TWO AGO. HOWEVER, IT IS A NICE IDEA. HOPE IT LASTS LONGER THAN THE ORIGINAL DID.
I'm so proud of my hometown and what it has become. Recall 'em all. Let's start over.

It is a great idea. Hopefully it takes off and people enjoy it. I personally know many young families that drive out of our city to purchase organic, locally grown produce. If the market uses local farms and advertises that aspect then it could be very successful.

I will be honest I don't see to many people from Middletown going to this, unless they are from the nicer areas of town. Even then they would probably drive to Kroger, Dorthy Lane Market, Jungle Jim's, or Findlay Market to get their organic food.

I remember going downtown on a weekend a few years back and there was a few people out near "Governor Park" selling fresh veggies. I think thats the name of the so called park.LOL
