Last night at the Sycamore Banquet Center on Central Avenue, the Hopewell District of the Dan Beard Council, Boy Scouts of America, held their annual adult recognition dinner and awards ceremony.

The Hopewell District is a region that covers all of Warren County and the upper corner of Butler County that includes Middletown and Monroe. It is almost identical to the boundary lines of the old Middletown / Mound Builders Area Council that was headquartered in Middletown until 1985 when it merged with Dan Beard Council. There are currently fifty-five different BSA units (Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops and Venturing Crews) in the Hopewell District with over 800 registered adult volunteers belonging to those units. In Middletown, we have six Cub Scout Packs, five Boy Scout Troops and one Venturing Crew.

Cub Scout Packs
#1 - First Presbyterian Church
#19 - First Baptist Church
#28 - Poasttown PTO
#85 - Knights of Columbus
#470 - Summit Academy
#800 - Sonny Hill Community Center

Boy Scout Troops
#1 - First Presbyterian Church
#18 - First Baptist Church
#20 - Knights of Columbus
#29 - Middletown Sportsmen's Club
#572 - Mount Zion Lutheran Church

Venturing Crews
#1 - First Presbyterian Church

Many of the adults in Middletown's Scouting units received awards at Wednesday evening's festivities.

The Outstanding Cub Scout, Boy Scout or Venturing Volunteer awards recognize registered adult leaders who provide outstanding support for their Pack, Troop or Crew. Between the three program levels, thirty-eight different adults received one of these awards for 2015. Recipients from Middletown area units include:
Ed Brooks - Pack 1 Den Leader
Staci Collins - Pack 1 Den Leader & Troop 1 Committee Member
Cassie Hawkins - Pack 1 Den Leader
Julie Edwards - Troop 1 Committee Member
David Williams - Troop 1 Assistant Scoutmaster
Kelly Wilder - Pack, Troop & Crew 1 Committee Chair

The District Meritorious Service Award recognizes Scouters who have demonstrated in a relatively short period of time exceptional performance in their role as a member of the Hopewell District. Of the seven honored with this award, one was from the Middletown area:
Connor Thompson - Troop 29 Assistant Scoutmaster and a youth member of Crew 1

The Ethel Linebaugh Award is given to a fully trained female Cub Scout Leader who has volunteered for a minimum of five years. This award was presented to only two adults for 2015, one of them from a Middletown unit:
Lisa Day - Pack 1 Webelos Leader & Popcorn Sale Coordinator

The Carl Whitney Memorial Award is given to the unit level leader that has best exemplified the Scout Oath and Law, and successfully delivered the promise of Scouting, within his or her unit during the past year or two. Two were presented this year, both to Middletown area leaders:
John Nenni - Troop 18 Scoutmaster
Stacy Britton - Troop 18 Committee Chairperson

The Scoutmaster of the Year Award honors the Scoutmaster recognized for leading and developing an exemplary Boy Scout program. This year's recipient was Scoutmaster for a Middletown unit:
Scott Walker - Troop 1

The Crew Advisor of the Year Award likewise honors the Crew Advisor recognized for leading and developing an exemplary Venturing program. Middletown's Crew Advisor was also this year's recipient:
Jeff Wilder - Crew 1

The Hopewell Legacy Award is presented to one individual each year that has left an indelible mark on Scouting in the Hopewell District through years of service and dedication to the advancement of the Scouting mission. This year's recipient was one of Middletown's favorite sons:
Everett Sherron - Troop 18 Senior Committee Member

The District Award of Merit is the highest honor a district can bestow on a volunteer. This award is primarily, but not exclusively, for those who have given time and service to Scouting (and possibly other community organizations as well) on a district and/or council level. Many of those who have been recognized in the past are well known for their contributions of time and talent to the service of youth in the communities within the Hopewell district. The District Award of Merit may only be presented to a recipient once. Three were presented in the Hopewell District for 2015, one to a Middletown area leader:
Karen Grooms - Troop 18 Committee Member

Congratulations to all those who were recognized last night, and also to all the dedicated adults who give their time and talents to further the Scouting movement in the Middletown area!
