Wow that is bad news. And with the auto plant problems, it could get worse for Ohio. Time to attract new business with low taxes and a business friendly treatment by the State.
You can only do so much locally.

Unfortunately Jonathan this almost guarantees higher taxes for the employer in the form of Unemployment taxes going up. Your right though the State needs to wake up also and make some positive moves.

well--according to a few, it must be Bill Murphy's fault.
I can see it climbing highjer this fall and winter.
More big co.layoffs and closings are immenent.
DHL?
auto?
I hear that AK has NO orders on the horizon, and could have a very difficult next few quarters.
But we will have a new choke plant to darken the air for decades.

Jonathan-" you can only do so much locally"- The surrounding communities seem to be doing alright in attracting businesses and job opportunities. ( except Middletown, of course) It is documented in numerous Journal stories that Southwest Ohio is one of the most active areas of the state for new job growth and development.(except Middletown, of course).

Spider I agree the immediate future for Ohio employment stats looks bleak.
What happens to AKSteel if the Auto industry starts to look to alternative materials to reduce the weight of the automobile to improve gas mileage? Is AKSteel Steel used in other products?

factor in the Graphics layoffs noted in today's MJ.
more locals losing decent employment and bennies.
At least the Douglas Park splash pad opened(a few days b4 school is 2 start!)
Still--better than not at all.
Auto downsizing
manufacturing downsizing
mortgage crunch continues full force and the credit card debacle is not going away.
Time for a payday quick loan maybe?
So--where is this great governor Strickland and his idea team?
should make 4 an interesting winter!

Hey Spider- Since you decided to mention the "great governor" Strickland, let's go ahead and mention what was going on the last 8 years under the Repubs Taft. Let's mention Ney(just released the other day), coingate and others to be fair about it. Give Strickland the same amount of time we gave Taft to judge whether he screwed up or not. Fair enough? I believe downsizing has occured under the Repubs also. I, personally , have been involved in three downsizings since 1994. It's not a new thing as companies continue to adjust their workforce and cut deadwood. And, as a sidenote- the Graphics layoffs are Murphy's fault too.
