According to our city manager, The Division of Police is studying the feasibility of building and operating a municipal impound lot. The cities of Cincinnati, Trenton and Oxford, currently maintain impounds lots to enhance revenue. The potential site is on City owned property on Terry Drive, which is properly zoned for this activity. Construction costs are estimated at $135,000, which should be recouped in the first year of operation. The City would continue to utilize privately owned wrecker companies and would charge the vehicle owners the storage fee. Unclaimed, drivable vehicles would be sold at auction, while wrecked vehicles would either be sold at auction or for scrap. We are gathering information as to the amount of revenue the project will generate; early estimates are approximately $150,000 a year. If we are able to present a viable business plan as a result of our research, we will bring the project forward to council.

Besides shrinking the size of Middletown's lower-income and minority population through the wrecking ball, why not down-size unnecessary City staff too?  Did you ever consider that Queen Judy?

Downsizing and bringing Benefits under control and in line with the real world would be a start.  I would say no more tax levies or renewal of current levies until these two items are done.

Knowing the illogical way this city is run. Knowing this city has driven out all large revenue producers except AK. Knowing that because these large revenues are no longer available to the city to pilfer from. Knowing that the city has recognized that the only revenue generating source is the taxes from the meager wages that workers make, is it any wonder that these same people, who are now scrounging for the scraps of any little pathetic money generator they can think of, would come up with this pathetic little tidbit to add a meager $135 thou to a budget of millions? This won't make a dent in helping pay for what is important in this town. What's next Council, (besides your little red light violation money generating program), a lemonade stand on every corner to contribute to the city's plight? How about selling raffle tickets to spend a day with the city manager. That ought to really bring in the dough. How about city-wide car washes to support the city budget? What 's.

Vet if it generates revenues of $150K a year, now it depends on the manpower to run it but just 1 1/2 employees will cost the city say $75k a year in salary and benefits and that is only if they don't need an additonal Dept. Head, Supervisor, Secretary to watch over the 1 1/2 employees. LOL

Will her majesty Queen Judy ever realize that Middletown isn't an upper middle-income community like Pickerington?  She's accustomed to working only in affluent suburban municipalities and Middletown was/is a bad fit for her!  And, how disappointing that those City Council members who were committed to removing two key senior level staff are now active participants in the love fests that we witness twice each month from the municipal building horseshoe!  CryCryCry

Who will perform or supply the towing service ? The city going to buy a wrecker or rolloff ? Who will benefit from the purchase of the land to build this impound lot ? Is the number of cars so high being impounded that it warrants a city owned lot ? This idea sounds all to fishey to me. I believe the city plans on becoming "legal kidnappers of automobiles" in order to make a buck.

Wondering if a City Impound Lot would just become the go to place for abandoned vehicles from the cities section 8 population?

This brings up more questions:

Will this drive some wrecker services out of business, as they also depend on storage income?  Business friendly? Business retention? I think NOT !!

Will the city police be secretly urged or become inclined to make questionable tows?

Will the city raise their storage fees above the norm to support their habit? Ouch

Any others?  Looks like everyone will be at the city's mercy!!

Arwendt   You know that is what they are looking at. Look out 2nd ward the poor ward, dont let your car set at the curb to long you will get taged and towed. My neighbor called the police to let them know they were going away for 2 weeks and there truck would be parked in front of there house. The police told them there truck would be towed for setting to long in front of there house.
