Middletown has implemented the CodeRED Emergency Notification System, a communication service that notifies residents by telephone in the event of an emergency.  The system can notify up to 50,000 residents and businesses an hour by phone and is used in the event of emergencies such as missing people, weather emergencies, chemical spills, contaminated water, and utility outages.

Is this "Code Red" going to operate as well as the emergency weather sirens that were installed years ago? In the past, the city hasn't used the sirens very efficiently and, other than Weds afternoons to test them, have never sounded them with any consistency. Watching the news will tell you about chemical spills, missing people, contaminated water and you'll probably know if your utilities are out at the house. Is this really needed or is it just another layer of city government nonsense and a program that will be mothballed a few months later?

Not sure how I feel about this, if used properly could be affective. But if used as a tool for telemarketing or some "city needs money scheme" then i will rip my phone out of the wall and toss it in the street.
