IMO- the biggest IMPACT event to happen in the last 10 years is the negative change in the developmental direction of this town, by current/former city leaders. This town was a blue collar, respectable, prosperous industrial town with service jobs as a secondary industry at one time. Now, the town is largely reliant on fed welfare low income, Section 8 programs for revenue and have put little to no effort in generating revenue from job creation/luring job opportunities for its citizens. IMO, this is important because city revenue, image and availability of decent jobs, charts the course for the prosperity/non-prosperity of this town toward the future.

Definitely the low/no income-Section 8 city-admin/Council induced influx into our community.
And it's effect on our schools,business/employment environment and public sevices.

No doubt it was AK Headquarters moving out of Middletown. That single event had the largest impact over this past decade. I would call this decade the AFTER AK ECONOMIC DOWNTURN of Middletown.

Adding to our problems are the slow moving cuts the city is making. So slow and painful, every step of the way.

At least we aren't alone in this journey.

It will be interesting to see after the holidays how many retail firms file chapter 11 and close up shop for good.  In some ways, with an already empty mall, hopefully Middletown won't have to deal with this pain.
