Perhaps I was confused by what I heard about the “wait list” at the last meeting of the Middletown Public Housing Agency (MPHA).
Perhaps the body responsible for the oversight of the MPHA, the Middletown City Council, should look into this.
[Oops…no…those two bodies are exactly the SAME!!! How could there be “oversight” without a CONFLICT OF INTEREST??? But there are no conflicts of interest in Middletown government --Mr. Landen sees to that -- so I must be wrong!!! Will someone straighten me out, please???]
Regardless, looked what was published “tucked away” in the “Business press releases” section of The Middletown Journal:
Middletown Public Housing Agency Will Open Wait List

Then this story popped up just a few minutes later, also on the "Business" page under "Latest local business headlines":
City looks to re-brand itself, its image

MIDDLETOWN — The city unveiled a branding initiative this week, simultaneously focusing on the past and future of the municipality.
With a motto “Bright past, brighter future,” the new design combines the city’s “river roots” with a “spark of innovation,” according to designer Kelly Kolar.
Economic Development Director Mike Robinette said the project started as a way to enhance signs near the Renaissance East development. As the process got under way, he said it became apparent the entire city needed a common branding element.
“This will lend itself to a more effective use of resources we’re currently using,” Robinette said. “We’ll be conveying a consistent, effective message and image to the city.”
Kolar said her company spent a fair amount of time figuring out Middletown’s identity, taking inspiration from the people, setting, institutions and culture that make up the community.
“An opportunity exists to strengthen the city’s message to stakeholders, residents and partner agencies,” Kolar said. “Our job is to create a brand toolkit of parts to encourage and inspire all to be active participants in building Middletown.”
Cincinnati-based Kolar Design received $14,850 from the city’s economic development fund for its consulting work.
City Manager Judy Gilleland said she was pleased with the way staff was able to leverage work already going on in the Renaissance district to benefit the whole of Middletown. “We recognized the city needed to have a fresh look and fresh image,” she said. “It worked out very nicely that we could apply the design work for the east end to the entire city.”
No official launch of the design is planned. Robinette said it will be rolled out piecemeal in the coming months. The first place most people will see the design likely will be on city business cards and letterhead.
“We’re not going to go out and spend a bunch of money to redo our signage,” Robinette said, noting that as older signs in the city are replaced, they will be swapped out with the modern logo.

This sort of thing reinforces the idea that some of us have that:
The BUSINESS of Middletown is GOVERNMENT!!!
Well, Middletown's government does seem to be "business friendly" to the business of government, doesn't it???

The city sure loves those outside agencies. Seems like everything they do is done by hired contractors in one capacity or another. What exactly are we paying for at city hall ? Does anyone down there do anything constructive ?

Good questions, Hermes.
However, I think that the larger issues are:
1. Why are such items as the MPHA "OPEN WAIT LIST" notice published tucked away in the "Business press releases" section of The Journal?
2. How naive (or stupid) must public officials be not to be able to understand how doing things such as Item 1 cannot help but foster the MIS-trust of City Hall by the public?

It also appeared in the Oxford Paper and the Hamilton Paper and they wonder why they have more out of town people on the waiting list than Middletown Residents. The BMH list is closed. So off to get on the Middletown list we go.
What was it 225 out of towner's on the list compared to 90 Middletown residents. Yeah lets import some more poverty from other city's, we don't have enough to go around now. But hey "Middletown has a Bright future", Gilleland says so.

Good lord! It doesn't cease. First, it was Bill Murphy who was tecahing Marketing 101, and now it has evolved to the city manager and the economic director. They want to run a rebranding campaign, associated with the Renaissance, that has housing stock sitting including one hime on the market for years, have raised such a negative image of Middletown associated with the errors made on section 8, admitting they had no idea they had allowed such high numbers in the first place, and discard all this damage including the cemetary bad publicity, the street hemorrage, the failing school system, the disaml ability to attract any business, and now are rebranding, after these continuous disastorous actions which have further "branded" Middletown so negatively. Is it a requisite to be so completely out of touch with reality, to demonstrate such rudimentary capabilities and knowledge, to get a job with the city. Or...is Middletown the very definition of the Peter Principle, and all leadership has risen accordingly?
What constitutes one for allowing such meaningless actions to be tolerated and unaccounted? I entered the wrong profession many years ago, public service is the place to be, especially Middletown. Its the city where those on the fast track for the Peter Principle rise to emphamy.

Of course, it could be simply the old "mis-direction" trick.
Keep everyone as angry as a mad bull on Flag Day and no one notices all of the really sneakie, underhanded, crooked stuff.

The "Bright past/brighter future" slogan must refer to the promising future this town has as a ghetto based on the success of the ever-increasing Section 8 program. Can't refer to anything positive, progressive or refer to logical solutions this city needs. What a joke! A slogan and a new logo is suppose to change what exactly? Council, Gilleland and others want to keep this program going to help their buddies with additional income using their rundown rental dumps and Robinette just gets his jollies by bulldozing everything in sight.
New letterhead and business cards? Who cares? Will the letter head have a picture of a decaying town? Will the business cards say "If you're in business, don't call us, we'll call you"? Will the new sign on the little brick wall by the 122 entrance to the city read "Section 8 Welcome- All Others, Don't Matter"?
There are some ignorant individuals running this ghetto, aren't they? Again, there is an urgent need to purge some members of Council and then, begin the process of firing the city manager on down. Let's start over. Irreparable damage has been done to OUR city.

I don't even like the slogan -- "Bright past"? Who uses that phrase to describe the past?
The town doesn't have an image problem, it has a reality problem.

Hey like they said, Citizen consensus is not critical. This is just the screw the citizen part, we are doing what we want.

Paraphrasing a prior post by Miss Vivian, maybe Middletown should be re-branded as follows:
Middletown ..... a 54% HUD-Branded Slumville !!
With best regards to Viet Vet, "What a City?"
