The Fire Division applied for a grant to replace their 21 year old aerial ladder truck. This vehicle was removed from service due to a broken frame and rusted out waterway. The Assistance to Firefighters Grant is intended to help fire departments and is administered by the Department of Homeland Security. The total grant request was for $776,000 with an 80/20 cost sharing split between the Federal Government and the City of Middletown.

The grant process is highly competitive with about 25% of requests being granted. Letters of support were pledged from Senators Brown and Voinovich and Representative Boehner.
Unfortunately, the Middletown Division of Fire was notified that the grant request was denied. At this time the reason for denial is not known. We will continue to work diligently to find alternative funding sources.

Do you mean to tell me that the future Speaker Of The House or long time Senator didn't have enough clout to make this happen? With a broken frame, what would it take to replace a vehicle? Doesn't get any worse than that does it? Thought public safety with fire department needs has a high priority and trumps most purchases. Would be interesting to find out why the denial. Wonder how many times the aerial ladder truck was used in the 21 year service history???

The Web site doesn't list the grant recipients for 2010, but the 2009 recipients are included.
http://www.firegrantsupport.com/content/html/afg/Awards09.aspx

It looks like there were 8 recipients in Ohio last year.

Vet, why not contact Boehner's office and ask him for an explanation if you're truly concerned:

It's not a blog to post on, but you can email:

Marianne- I could care less about a Boehner explanation or any other dam politicians take on things nor why this was not supported. I merely made a comment that eluded to Boehner's newfound celebrity status as the potential new Speaker, and his sudden rise to fame and clout, that's all. Again, it was done "tongue in cheek" and with a major dose of sarcasm. Apparently, you are "not set up at this time" to accept this brand of humor. Sometimes I get distracted and fail to operate in the literal sense as you would have me to do. My apologies.

Forgive me for believing you were sincerely concerned about the fire department not receiving a grant to replace equipment and were looking for an explanation as to why they did not receive the funding. I see now that you were just using it as an excuse to rant about a politician.

So, yes, I failed to see the humor in your post, or perhaps you're just not very funny nor clever?

I hope that others, who may be concerned that the Fire Division did not receive the grant, would follow up with Representative Boehner or Senator Voinovich to express their concerns.

Didn't Voinovich retire?  Don't bother Boehner -- he's busy letting our tax dollars go to Kyl of Arizona...a few days after this supposed earmark "ban".  Bunch of hypocrites.

Mercy Marianne, you appear to be wound very tightly in your apparent non-existent views of humor. Must be a terrible feeling to go through life and to not have experienced any levity at any level. My condolences.

As to the suggestion of a follow-up with Boehner or Voinovich.....it really isn't that big a deal to treat this as a life or death issue as the tone of your responses indicate. Your critique of my post seems to be grossly over-exaggerated as to the necessity of making a contact IMO. You'll have to excuse me if I am not reacting as you would expect a college student to react in your world of academia. Most of us function outside that world that sometimes has a hard time connecting with reality.

I'm not the person who made the remarks about the politicians involved, Bill. I made the mistake of taking someone seriously when he expressed concern about why Fire didn't receive the grant.

Actually, I have a great sense of humor. I just haven't read anything by you that is funny or clever. I guess it would be pretty sad if my experience of "humor" was limited to your posts here; you're right there, Vet!

Not sure what you mean by "my world," but make whatever misguided assumptions you wish.

You made a comment that I made the mistake of taking seriously (in other words, I thought you were expressing genuine concern about something). It won't happen again.

$776,000 for a fire engine???  That's ridiculous!!!  Why, for that much we could almost get another ART CENTER!!!

I hear the FD may look into leasing a new ladder truck. The truck they wanted at first was well over a million dollars. They, however, would settle for the "cheap" one.Embarrassed HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

That would be an ART CENTER without the HOODS - they are Extra.
