Today's Journal....IS THIS PREMATURE ENTHUSIASM? Chamber honors local businesses By Michael D. Pitman Staff Writer MIDDLETOWN — The deal between Cincinnati State Middletown and the city earned special recognition Thursday. The Chamber of Commerce Serving Middletown, Monroe and Trenton honored the school and city of Middletown, along with Start Skydiving and Crane Consumables, with its Faith in the Future award. “I never knew another community to go to the ‘whatever it took’ level to bring that community college here,” said Bill Triick, president and CEO of the chamber. “A lot of people won’t do that.” The city spent three years courting Cincinnati State Technical & Community College to the city, including spending nearly $500,000(OF TAXPAYER MONEY WITHOUT ASKING THOSE PROVIDING THE MONEY WHETHER THEY WANTED THIS) to purchase five buildings, including the former CG&E; building at 1 N. Main St., where the downtown campus is located. (WE ARE STILL STUCK WITH A FEW OF THESE PURCHASED BUILDINGS THAT MAY OR MAY NOT SEE ANY USAGE AND, AFTER PURCHASE, ARE NOW IN A "GIVE-AWAY" MODE AS THE CITY LEADERS DIDN'T HAVE A CLUE WHETHER CS NEEDED THEM OR NOT) The city eventually donated the First National Bank building at 2 N. Main St. to the college for future expansion....... THAT THE TAXPAYER BOUGHT FROM THE THATCHER ESTATE, AGAIN, WITHOUT ASKING THE PUBLIC FOR ANY INPUT ON THE PURCHASES. Cincinnati State Middletown Director Michael Chikeleze attributed the honor to “the power of partnership.” "POWER OF PARTNERSHIP" BETWEEN CINN. STATE, HEP AND THE CITY LEADERS AND THE 5% OF PEOPLE WHO WANTED THIS, WHILE NEVER ASKING FOR THE OPINION OF THE MAJORITY FOOTING THE BILL FOR THE PURCHASE. “This project has been an amazing collaboration with our partners, (Higher Education Partners), the city and the community,” he said. “It’s a reflection of how we work so well for the benefit of the community. We’re all excited.” TO CLARIFY FOR ACCURACY.....THE "COMMUNITY" HE REFERENCES IS BUT 5% OF THE CITY THAT ARE INNER CIRCLE FRIENDS OF CITY HALL. AGAIN, THE OTHER 95% WERE NOT ASKED FOR AN OPINION. JUDGING BY THE DEGREE OF PARTICIPATION BY THE "COMMUNITY", I WOULD SAY THE JURY IS STILL OUT ON THIS RISK AND THAT A MORE SUBTLE BIT OF ENTHUSIASM MAY BE MORE APPROPRIATE UNTIL SUCCESS IS SHOWN. I attended the Chamber meeting yesterday, and was on the citizens' committee leading up to the C St.opening. Also spoke with MY reporters Levingston and Pitman afterwards. C St. was a small part/focus of the overall session. I see this C St move as by far the only meaningful thing to happen in that over-blown area for the last 20+ years. If anything deveops there, it will be because of C St, and their team. Give them what they want, and get out of their way. Those buildings were usesless and contributing nothing. Did we over-pay and over-buy? IMO absolutely! We elected these officials(with far more than 5% support), and this is how they have operated. In less than a year, Mr.Smith, Mr.Laubaugh, Mr.Picard and Mrs.Mort will be out of office IF we choose to replace them. So--the opportunity is coming to create a new majority, or at least elect 2 Council-members that could block emergency legislations, and slow the process to proper procedure. This re-alignment could also change "things" big-time in the city building and their policies/priorities(if you follow my thinking). I work with Mr.Triick regularly, and we often discuss all of these situations. While he is the head man at the Chamber, he does not make decisions completely on his own. We disagree often(surprise), though he will listen(more than can be said for many around here). Mr.Triick is the least of out issues around here.
