MIDDLETOWN — A Middletown organization has submitted an application to create a historic district in downtown. Downtown Middletown Inc., a nonprofit organization charged with promoting and helping in revitalizing downtown, submitted its application to create the historic downtown district to the National Register of Historic Places, said Mike Robinette, a board member of the organization. “The fundamental motivation for doing it is when we create a historic district, any significant property within that district qualifies for state and federal (historic) tax credits,” said Robinette. Most properties within the proposed downtown district would qualify for the state and federal historic tax credits, he said. The application also included extending the South Main Street District to include properties around the Central Avenue and Main Street intersection and have the former Manchester Inn & Conference Center, the original Middletown Public Library building and the Railroad Depot at Central and Grimes on the National Register. The application process, which costs about $14,000, was paid for by a Middletown Community Foundation grant, Robinette said. It was prepared with the assistance of Columbus architectural firm Hardlines Design Company. “It’s a rather involved process,” said Robinette. The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the nation’s historic places “worthy of preservation,” according to the organization’s website. It was authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and the National Park Service’s program coordinates and supports public and private efforts to identify, evaluate and protect historic and archaeological resources, according to the website. More than 80,000 properties are listed on the National Register and represent 1.4 million individual resources, such as buildings, sites, districts, structures and objects. Almost every county in the United States has at least one place listed in the National Register. There are 85 structures or districts registered in Butler County, and four in Middletown — which includes the Great Mound, Hughes Manor, South Main Street District and John B. Tytus House. Two buildings within the South Main Street District — Sorg Opera House and the former Rose Furniture building — are being targeted for historic tax credits for renovation. There have been hundreds of buildings in 34 Ohio communities since 2007 that have received historic tax credits, and more than $327 million in tax credits have been awarded to 156 projects, including nearly $5.9 million for five projects in Hamilton. Middletown City Manager Judy Gilleland, who worked on a similar application for an 89-building district as an intern in Tipp City, said it’s “a worthwhile designation and provides cohesion for a downtown area.” “It demonstrates that there is a higher level of interest in the district and that we as a community value historic structures,” she said. |

Well, some comments here..... 1. These people will do anything for their precious downtown area, and intentionally let the rest of the town fend for itself. Why don't they have the same commitment for the rest of the city? 2. I don't see how the entire downtown area is going to qualify for this grand scheme of historical structures. There is a mixed bag of buildings from many different eras down there. Can't see this as a total package deal but rather selected buildings that would fall under this program. 3. The railroad depot is at Central and Charles St., not Grimes. 4. Are there other areas of town that would also qualify for this, and ,if so, why just select the downtown for application? 5. Even with a "historical building" designation and all that would go with it monetarily, who would tackle the Manchester, given it's condition and the overall cost of bringing it up to date for use? 6. ROBINETTE HAD NO VALUE WHEN HE WAS HERE BEFORE. DOES THE MAN HAVE VALUE NOW? YOUR GROUP OF EGOTISTIC, SELF-GRATIFYING EXCLUSIONARIES HAVE THE HIGH INTEREST IN THE DOWNTOWN DISTRICT LADY. CERTAINLY DOESN'T APPLY TO THE MAJORITY OF THE COMMUNITY. YOU "VALUE HISTORIC STRUCTURES", DO YOU? THEN WHY DID YOU FILL IN SUNSET POOL, DEMOLISH ROOSEVELT SCHOOL, TEAR DOWN HALF THE CITY AND NOW ARE TEAMING UP WITH THE SCHOOL BOARD PEOPLE TO DEMOLISH THE OLD HIGH SCHOOL AND THE WADE MILLER GYM? HELL, IT'S A WONDER YOU HAVEN'T KNOCKED DOWN BARNITZ STADIUM YET. NO, YOU SPEAK NONSENSE GILLELAND. DO US ALL A FAVOR.... LEAVE OUR CITY NOW. If City Hall has such a strong commitment to history and historic structures, why did they let Pendleton Art Center turn downtown into clowntown???

More delusions about "historic" buildings? Dear God make it stop. From historic districts to Sec 8 to Park-n-Ride to Cincy St., everything done by city admin is to chase government handout dollars. There is no vision, there is no sensible plan, there is no hope. This is tail wagging the dog. And in the end it will be another lesson that government can't just create economic demand -- it must come form the private sector. Look to the future -- Tear it all down!!

Now I know what MIDDLETOWN hasn't put asphalt on the majority of streets in 27 years! Its because Judy and council view the streets as "historic" for God's sake. It is a crime to alter the landscape of anything historic, which includes the streets. Soon, MIDDLETOWN will be historic---as the city that was. Obviously, the citizens of Middletown value the historic nature of the asphalt covering streets. BTW, couldn't Vail be a National Registry Landmark? MIDDLETOWN and Main will never gain a reputation for esteemed historic site. Try Ashland Park in Lexington, KY with Idle Hour Country Club.
