AK Steel, West Chester, Ohio

Fourth-quarter loss totalled $430.6-million (U.S.), or $3.88 per share, and underscored the difficulties facing steel companies as customers in the automotive, construction and industrial equipment slash orders. A year earlier, it earned $106.7-million, or 95 cents per share.

Total Sales fell 14 per cent to $1.46-billion.

AK Steel said it expects shipments in the first quarter of 2009 to be in a range between 850,000 and 900,000 tons.
