MIDDLETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY’S LEVY COMMITTEE ANNOUNCED
The Libraries Enrich Lives Committee has appointed James VonderHaar as chairperson for the upcoming levy campaign. Mr. VonderHaar also serves as president of the Middletown Public Library Board.
The Middletown Public Library system serves the eastern half of Butler County – including the cities of Monroe, Trenton, Middletown, Seven Mile and the townships of West Chester, Madison, Wayne, Lemon, and Liberty and has been able to withstand several cuts in state funding in recent years –more than18% of the total operating budget. Additional cuts of 7% are expected. (Lane Public Library serves the western part of Cutler County and will be asking for voters in their district to support a similar levy.
VonderHaar said, “ Our public library system is, for the first time in history, asking voters to approve a modest 0.75 mill operating levy to help defray the lost support from the State of Ohio. Through careful attention to finances through the years, we’ve been able to withstand several cuts in funding but, with the most recent round of cuts felt by all libraries and many other government services, the library has been forced to reduce staff, cut service hours and buy fewer materials. A levy is needed to maintain this important service in our county.”
Doug Bean, Library Director, said, “This levy, when passed on May 4, will restore many of the cut services, staff positions and, with continued careful spending, provide the high level of library service and materials library users have come to expect including free Internet access for those seeking employment. Passage of the levy will mean more staff available to library users, restored children, teen and adult programing, meeting spaces available in the evenings, more new materials – books, cd’s, on-line research tools, etc.”
Other community members serving on the campaign steering committee are: Treasurer: Richard Sears, CFP® of West Chester; Division Chairs: recently retired assistant library director Judi Girton of Middletown, James Frazier of Trenton and Art Hupp of West Chester; Campaign Funding:Ann Baines; and advisors Knight Goodman and
Ann Mort.
