Young people everywhere are exploring career options-even Little Brothers and Sisters at Rosa Parks Elementary! As Big Brothers Big Sisters of Butler County concludes its Site Based Mentoring Program for the 2013-2014 academic year, the 20 Little Brothers and Sisters at Rosa Parks are preparing a presentation about their future careers. Their presentation will be held Tuesday, May 14, at 4:30pm in the Rosa Parks Elementary cafeteria. The children will process in and announce their names and the year of their expected high school graduation. The children will also speak about the careers they wish to pursue and the barriers they may encounter in realizing their goals. The high school seniors who served as their mentors this year will also be recognized.
Tuesday’s ceremony will be attended by the children’s parents, Rosa Parks teachers and administrators, and community leaders. The public is also welcome.
Every week during this academic year the Little Brothers and Sisters, with help from their Big Brothers and Sisters, have learned about possible career choices, how to begin preparing for those careers, and what obstacles may be in their way. Torri Colts, coordinator of the Rosa Parks program, says, “As a continuation of last year’s “Graduation Bound” curriculum, I wanted the Little Brothers and Sisters to have a vision about what comes after graduation. I wanted them to have a plan in place so this year we have been focusing on careers.”
There are currently 152 Butler County children waiting for a Big Brother or Sister. For information about Big Brothers Big Sisters or how to volunteer, contact Marvin Torres, 513-867-1227 or marvin.torres@bbbsbutler.org.
