On August 20th at a Middletown Board of Education the BOE repealed school instructional fees for the 2013-2014 school year. This only affects instructional fees – pay to participate fees, fines (library fines, lost books, etc.), and other non-instructional fees can still be charged.
Fees due for years prior to the 2013-14 school year are still due and can be collected.
This measure is directly related to Middletown’s enrollment in the USDA CEO program. Because all students are now eligible for free lunch and Ohio does not allow schools to charge fees to students who are on free lunch, Middletown City Schools will not be charging any students fees for this school year.
With over 75 percent of the students already receiving free or reduced-price lunches last year the district was allowed to expand its involvement in the national school lunch program.
The school district is now able to provide kids with breakfast, lunch and even snacks for kids enrolled in after-school activities.
