This could be a slow year for the Middletown’s Building Inspection Division if the first three months of Middletown building permit reports are any indication of how the rest of 2009 will look. The lack of project activity in 2009 has prompted the cancellation of meetings of the city’s Planning Commission for February, March and April along with no Board on Zoning Appeals meetings to be held in March and April.
Ed Richter from the Middletown Journal interviewed the planning director Marty Kohler and he said that he could not recall having to cancel any meetings during his six prior years with the city. Kohler also reported that he did not see any other new major building projects waiting in the wings. Also mentioned was that fact that there have not been any other new housing starts either. There two exceptions however that include the major projects that have already started at Pilot Chemical and Quaker Chemical plants.
Within the first three months of 2009 there were 112 permits issued at a total of $3.39 million. Even though the number of permits is up there were only 44 permits at this time last year the 2008 totals were $11.89 million. To put things in perspective: In 2007 the city issued 56 permits and the total was $7.1 million, which more than doubled the number of permits so far in 2009.
