The downtown Middletown parking garage will open to the public for free parking beginning February 1, 2009.
Public Works & Utilities Director Dave Duritsch said, “We will close off the top levels of the downtown City Parking Garage which eliminates the need for elevators, requires fewer lights and allows us to provide free covered parking on the lower levels. This action should save tax payer dollars, since income derived from parking revenues has not met the maintenance expenses in recent years.”
It is expected that downtown businesses will benefit from the additional free parking. If a major event requires additional parking, the chains can be removed to allow parking on the upper levels. There will be no monthly reserved parking spaces under the new plan.
“We are constantly seeking ways to better serve our citizens and save their tax dollars,” said City Manager Judy Gilleland.”We are anxious to move ahead with small and large projects that help improve our city, especially those that also save money.”
