Greg Schwarber - New Middletown Police Chief
Wednesday, January 2, 2008 10:30:51 AM - Middletown Ohio
by Bill Rogers

Interim Middletown, Ohio City Manager Steve Husemann didn't slow down and finish his term quietly after finding his replacement in Judith A. Gilleland, he had stated a commitment to appoint a new chief of police before he left his office and as his last act he did just that. Two ranking officers were declared eligible for the job by the Middletown Civil Service, 47 year old Major Mark Hoffman and 53 year old Major Gregory Schwarber.

Major Gregory Schwarber has been picked by Husemann as Middletown's next Police Chief. Following the retirement of former Chief Mike Bruck in 2005, Maj. Hoffman has served as Interim Police Chief up to the present.

The decision comes as a surprise to many, as Maj. Hoffman was thought to be the likely pick for the position due to his higher performance ratings. Maj. Schwarber is expected to be officially promoted at the next Middletown City Council meeting on January 8th.

The best MAN wins in the end.

I personally feel that the new chief needs to look into the conduct of the street officers while off duty. The female officers in particular. When one has the job of "protecting" the public, they shouldn't be seen drinking and partying heavily while off duty. There is a code of conduct for officers even when not in uniform, and when these officers cannot control their actions off duty, it doesn't give the citizens of Middletown a very good feeling to know that the females officers don't know how to act or talk when around civilians.

I would have to agree with this person on the conduct of the female middletown police officers. This comment is not meant to slur the entire Middletown police Department, as I am sure there are many fine upstanding officers here in our city. However, when female officers are seen drinking heavily in public with conduct unbecoming to a police officer, then it needs to be addressed to their superiors.

I don't see any condemning going on here, but I do think that if there is a complaint, it should be addressed to the officers's superiors directly at the Middletown Police Dept. I also don't feel that since this particular officer was of a different nationality, that it had anything to do with her ability as an officer, so I wanted to put that to rest, just in case it was known which officer was being referred to here. Middletown has some fine officers, but all it takes is one.

i just wanted to set the rcord straiht here about the middleton Police. What the pd does off duty should be there business. not the city of Middleton. I work for the pd here in town and am insulted with these coments. not all of us are in party mode when were not working and the ones that are need to be disiplined for there actions.

Boy did they make a mistake naming
Greg Schwarber the Police Chief less than a year ago.

Now he shoots himself while giving his daughter a safety lesson on guns. He told Monroe Police "he didn't think it was loaded", WOW what an idiot.

Enough said.

Agreed! Mark Hoffman has been a respectful and decent person every time I've spoken to him. As long as I've known of him, he's not injured himself or his kids w/his own firearm. We deserve a leader that we can be proud of. He did a good job as interim chief, and should be the real deal!

I saw these comments a while back about the police dept. here and have to agree with some of it. For startersl Hoffman is not 'that' upstanding of a man, or his personal dealings with infidelity involving another city employee wouldn't have shown its ugly face. Secondly, while I do agree with you "Scott" that Middletown does have some fine officers on it's force, there are some that wear the badge and disgrace it. With the job of "cop", you always have to be aware of how your acting in public. There are a couple immature officers on the force, one definately being a female one, which I know personally. She had no business being put in this position, and the power she's been entitled to, is certainly not deserving. Sadly, it does indeed only take 'one' to put a slur on the entire PD.
