Warren County Community Services Joins March For Meals 2009
Friday, May 8, 2009 10:31:07 AM - Middletown Ohio
March for MealsMarch For Meals is a National campaign held every year in the March. The program is directly related to the Meals on Wheels organization which delivers meals to senior citizens unable to cook or provide themselves with food. March For Meals' goal is to increase funding, increase public awareness, and recruit new members to the Meals on Wheels organization.

Warren County Community Services (WCCS) has announced that they will participate in the 2009 March For Meals campaign. WCCS Director of Nutrition Tom Cox says "We are excited about this year's campaign. We hope to raise awareness of senior hunger in our community and let people know who they can call for help."

Many senior citizens who do not work anymore live on a fixed income. Because there is no increase fluctuation in their money, they sometimes have to make a hard choice between getting medication, utilities, and even food. The Meals on Wheels program works hard to help the elderly out of the issue of not having a decent meal.

With the Meals on Wheels program, a trained driver hand delivers a nutritious meal everyday to the citizens on their list. each meal provides one-third of the Recommended Daily Intake(RDI) of nutrients that many senior citizens require. Besides just delivering the meals, the drivers also act as a check up for their deliveries. The drivers make sure the elderly person they see is doing o.k. WCCS, last year, made around 31 emergency calls for senior citizens who fell, became ill, or passed away.

WCCS pays for everything they need to operate the Meals on Wheels program. Although they are reimbursed for the food provided, other necessities come out of pocket. The driver's for WCCS's Meals on Wheels log nearly 143,000 miles each year in the Warren County area alone and it takes its toll on the driver's vehicle. The vans themselves are already dated and Meals on Wheels does not pay for any vehicle repairs which puts a financial burden on the program.

However, WCCS and Meals on Wheels are dedicated to the program and will continue to work hard to provide their services for years to come. If you are interested in getting involved with WCCS's Meals on Wheels program or the March For Meals, visit their site at wccsi.org.
