Marty Kohler and friends have noticed there is a major slowdown in building permits issued for 2009 so far. Gee Marty, the people don't have the extra money to build that garage or to add that room onto the house? Could it be that people are working two $6/hour jobs just to put food on the table and pay the rent because, for job selection in this town, that's the only choices they have? Perhaps the economic development department needs to try a little harder in attracting some new businesses to replace Corson Packaging, Black Clawson, Sorg Paper, Aeronca, Middletown Paperboard and half of AK Steel that have been lost over the years. The city needs to give people opportunities to put a little extra spending money in their pocket for them to think about new building projects and that means- decent paying jobs. If people don't feel secure, they ain't gonna expand. Now we know why Larry Tuttle is driving around writing housing violations- he's not doing new construction inspections.

Prediction of the Day

Don't be surprised to see Queen Judy reassign some Planning Department and Buidling Inspection Division staff to the "so-called' Community Revitalization Department - Community Development Division.  In view of the 'Monopoly' money that is flowing into the city from HUD, I would not be at all surprised.  This is only a prediction and not necessarily what I advocate.

Since these employees have no work to do why doesn't the city lay them off and save a few of our tax dollars. This is nothing more than "Busy Work".

City admin seems to be in a state of total disarray, and no one seems to know for sure who is exactly doing what specific jobs. Seems all decisions now come down to Ms.G, Mr.K and Mr.D. Econ Dev is far too quiet and a non-factor to the small business community. There seems to be nothing to "plan" or "engineer" either.  Council can't decide anything, and seems totally blindsided by the decisions and actions coming before them. With the time wasted on babble, Council Comments should be the process quickly eliminated, or at least limited to 3 minutes(with the light or preferably an electric shock buzzer going off).

TVM seems to be in complete denial on the important issues facing our community, and if they want to increase viewership(and donation $$!), maybe they should become a little more situation-oriented with a much more broad discussion of various viewpoints on current issues, instead of the SOS fluff.

As the city demonstrates dictatorial punitive rule, the citizens are becoming more detached and opposed to our governmental processes. Heaven forbid that our city need the citizens diown the road to help out with any upcoming financial shortfalls. That support will not be there. City had better get the new expanded Econ Dev Dept. on the ball producing major results quickly!

It's disheartening that 'government knows best bureaucrats' ignored the visionary, cost-effective suggestion of Paul Nagy regarding a practical and attainable strategy to revitalize Middletown using the model that worked so successfully in Atlanta, GA.  So sad that the 'elitists' controlling our community again turned deaf ears on him.

Bonus Budget Cut Idea!
Sorry, it doesn't bode well for the city to have employees with little to do but busywork.
Council, please right-size your budget.
