Just reading, once again, the State of the City address given by Mulligan on February 12, 2008 at the Senior's Center. In reviewing the high points of the speech, (in among the glamorous, fluffy, gooey emptiness that permeates this "event"), I have found no evidence that much of anything Lawrence talked about has come to fruition. Topics such as economic development plans, new council members bringing new ideas and "good things" to Middletown, a new city manager bringing "fresh ideas and a new prospective", council focusing on credibility and responsibility as they lead the city, disciplined planning, disciplined people, winning over the doubters, working to change the negative trends, looking for new ways of doing things and stop doing the things that don't work over and over again, council committed to working on issues that will move the city forward, Mulligan looking forward to sharing a plan that will address the aging infrastructure and streets IN THE COMING MONTHS,( this is from 2008), finding new solutions to old problems, inviting all citizens to " get involved", and on and on it goes. How much of this has actually happened? I can't see where any improvement has been made at all---- Lawrence. It's all just "empty jibberish" with absolutely no action or worth to them. Given that- what was the real purpose of this exercise?

Reading some of the old Planning Commission meetings from 2004-2005 at the old CG&E building on Main St.,when Thatcher was on Council. The topic was on greyfield and brownfield development and access to the downtown area from I-75 to stimulate development on the west side. Talked about housing stock inventory and mixed development areas and the incentives that would be required by the city to attract developers to these areas. Again, like Mulligan's State of the City Address, just idle talk with no intention of any action beyond this meeting. What a waste of time. They don't have the money lined up to do this; they don't have the expertise to do this and they don't have any city plan to entice developers to see any of this through. They basically couldn't find their behind with a blueprint. Many meetings, accomplishing nothing. Why bother.
