Billions ready to spend on the single best investment for transportation in the future. Right? Wrong!

Art Guzzetti, of the American Public Transport Assn and CATO's Randal O'Toole join Stossel to discuss the efficiency and economic feasibility of high speed rail

Watch this video and find out that you will pay and pay and pay for ever. And likely you will not be a regular rider, ever!

Well naturally we'll pay forever because like any transportation system the government will subsidize them till the end of time.

has anyone ever seen a railroad that wasn't government subsidized ?

Hey CONRAIL was a major success as railroads go. Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific I believe, still stand on their own two feet. May be wrong on that now though.

WE ARE PAYING LIKE CRAZY FOR OUR HIGHWAYS.

As over $6 billion in improvements are planned for the interstate corridor between Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland, you have people complaining about a measley $400 million of federal dollars to go to a rail line to connect the same. Yes it will require subsidy, but so do roads. In fact, the subsidy at $17 million is less than 1/100 of ODOT's annual operating budget. Many other states have slow running train service with excellent ridership, Ohio will be left behind if it does not move forward with this.

Sure there will be plenty of people who don't ride it, but there will be plenty who do. Those people will also not be driving on our highways, providing less congestion for those who are stuck to their cars.

Vet - You are wrong on Union Pacific. I use to work for them and they have recieved government money for over a 100 years. (Ok that maybe an exaggeration) but yeah UP does get subsidation. And I'm sure Conrail does too.

But that is not apples to apples!!!

Compare the "subsidy" of roads PER PASSENGER MILE to the "subsidy" of the proposed high-speed rail lines PER PASSENGER MILE!!!  THAT is what will tell the tale!!!

Vet, I believe that all railroads were subsidized with our tax dollars until the 1970's. I heard that in the '70's FEC (Floria East Coast) railroad restarted without a government handout, becoming the only railroad standing on its own. Of course FEC employees had been on strike for decades and only when no strikers were left, could FEC restart and make a profit.
Government is not the answer to problems, government is the problem.

The so-called high-speed rail is somebodies pipe dream. What they really mean is the train will use the old tracks and be limited to 39 miles per hour, but it with turn into a bullet train in time. This reasoning is like you buying a wrecked Yugo, putting it up on blocks in your front yard and waiting for it to turn into a new BMW. Your chances of getting the new BMW is better than ending up with a real high-speed train because the government will be involved with the train.
Government is not the answer to problems, government is the problem.
