The Ohio Senate Republican caucus screening committee on Thursday recommended that State Rep. Bill Coley of Liberty Township fill the seat of State Sen. Gary Cates. Cates will vacate his seat on Monday. Gov. John Kasich appointed him senior vice chancellor for the division of Innovation and Enterprise Development at the Ohio Board of Regents.
"Bill has been an outstanding representative for his district and the experience and energy he can bring to the Ohio Senate makes him the right choice to fill this seat," Senate President Tom Niehaus, R-New Richmond, said. State Rep Coley, State Rep. Tim Derickson of Hanover Township, Business owner Stuart Locke in Middletown and Mark Haverkos of West Chester Township met with the committee on Thursday.Coley and Derickson recieved 134 and 110 votes respectively will be headed to a second round of balloting. The other candidates weren't considered in the second round since they collectively only recieved 18 votes.Representative Bill Coley is serving his fourth and final term as allowed by law, in the Ohio House of Representatives.The district includes all of Butler County.
