According to the Middletown Board of Education, the district will be able to conduct winter extracurricular activities. Sufficient funds were raised from a variety of sources: Community donations; Student fees; Coaches and advisors waiving their salaries; and $90,000 from the district’s general fund.
Prior to the November levies, the winter coaches and advisors offered their services on a volunteer basis pending the outcome of both November levies, to help make extra-curricular activities more affordable for students. Since only one of the levies passed, coaches continue to work on a volunteer basis.
District superintendent, Steve Price said that “although the financial resources provided are appreciated, this short term solution will not sustain an extra-curricular activities program for the long term.”
Student fees for extracurricular activities are:
GMC High School Sports - $225
GMC High School Academic (Chess and Quiz team) - $85
Middle School GMC Sports - $120
High School and Middle School Academic/Music Activity - $25
School Board President, John Venturella, applauded all of the supporters who stepped up to help Middletown students. "I want to thank all of the coaches, advisors, families and community members who supported our students in a time of need. I want to especially thank our coaches and advisors for placing the needs of our students ahead of their own personal needs," he said. "District financial support however, is the best way to make sure that all of our students continue to receive opportunities in which they might excel.”
