Last nights city council meeting focused primarily on HUD and the city’s grown section 8 problems. As the problems continue for Middletown’s section 8 Vice Mayor Anita Scott Jones calls for a taming of the beast, “if one council created this beast, then another council can tame the beast!” She said. For what seems like the trillionth time:
You can't fix it if you don't know what's wrong. You can't prevent its reoccurance if you don't understand what caused it to happen in the first place.
Don't look back to see what happened, council!!! Just keep looking forward to our "bright future" and work on the brakes while the 'sticking gas pedal' keeps the throttle wide open!!!
After all, "There is no compelling reason to change!!!"

So Ms. Scott-Jones used the word "beast" huh? Must be the current buzz word, originated by the Spider. Have seen the word used in several other posts on various topics referring to controlling the city's out-of-control programs, taxes and spending.
Wonder what was going through Becker, Mulligan and Armbruster's minds when she was discussing this? Embarrassment? Resentment? Denial? Disinterest? They are partly responsible for past mistakes on the lack of oversight by Council concerning this program, are they not? Guess Ms. Scott-Jones didn't win any friends among this group when she mentioned the "creation/taming of the beast". Is this just a passing comment on the part of Ms. Scott-Jones or is this the beginning of a challenge to introduce a reduction to the current program's level of participation? What are your intentions, Ms. Scott-Jones? If the intent is to move toward voucher reduction, don't be afraid to jump in and help her, Josh and AJ. She will need some allies to change the current misguided program in place and you both can be a factor. Choose wisely, if there is an opportunity. |

Tame it my Ass we ought to mount its head on a sign and post at the entrance way to the city above the Water Feature with a sign that says, "How not to Operate a City".

Vet--"Starving the Beast" is a very old somewhat Biblical phrase hardly original to me.
Can we just make Ms.Scott Jones the Mayor now?
She seems to be the only Councilmember pro-active on the issues.
Actually the only Councilmember discussing the issues.
A few others seem to want out of there as quickly as possible.
Hopefully the three new electees and Mr.Adkins will join her.
Any word on who will replace Mr.Thatcher on the Planning Commission?

The term spider used was focusing upon the waste within city hall and the school system, the ferocious appetitie, and constant cashflow demanded by the beast that wanted fed. I respectfully don't think ASJ's comments were a sign of + or - nature, it was neutral. The city council members acknowledged none had a clue they had let section 8 get so out of hand. I also don't view in the context of the beast, which needs to be starved. It needs to be diminished, but the levies and taxes need to be starved (lowered) as the beast at city hall wants to maintain the steak lifestyle it has held since the 1960's.
Its time serious orgainzation begin in this city. If a few would like to meet in a private location, I'd be for it. As for city council, and the new members, what a disappointment. I thought the new members, of which two seemed to jump on opportunities that needed action, haven't ceased the moment on the ordinance change of asphalt and infrastructure. What hat ASJ's done---nothing I've heard referenced.
Its time to starve the beast. When I was at IBM years ago when I began my career, we called the mainframe environment requiring alot of "care and feeding". That's the same with city hall---they have a big appetitite and need to have bariatric surgery to have that stomach shrunk, aka, as spider says, starve the beast---quit feeding cash that's wasted. Evan Blay's announcement he wasn't running was indicative of a system that fails when you have the same people in the same position for decades. It is killing America, and it killed Middletown. Time to purge those in office, and starve the beast called city hall.

Starving a beast is okay when you have it trapped where it can get at no food, but remember: between the two of them (city and school district) these beasts have about $200,000,000 per year worth of raw meat!!! (And the beast masters in DC keep throwing more in every year.) Starving them by cutting out a few million a year will be a long process and beasts are more dangerous when they are cornered or hungry. And remember, beasts don’t obey the law, nor do they care which villagers they eat. So wouldn’t it be much quicker and safer for all concerned if all of the villagers would join together??? Then they could either slay the beasts, or at least drive them away from the village. So, we can try starving them, all the while hoping that they don’t devour us one at a time. Or we can bring in a mighty hunter from outside to cage the beasts, or we can band together to slay the beasts or drive them away from the village. Then again, we could just sit around crying and talking about beasts, and then just before they devour us moan that someone should’ve warned us. |

Sooooo..... in response to Mike's post.......for the umteenth time.....do we plan to make the trip to Hamilton to see Betty McGary at the Board Of Elections to see what we need to do to initiate recalls on certain council members or school board members? How about petitions passed around to demand that the street money taken from the street repair fund in the 80's and placed in the General Fund, be returned back to the street fund? How about petitions taken around for voter signatures to repeal the city income tax percentage from 1.75% back to 1.50% or lower? AND/OR..... are we finally going to meet to discuss potential candidates if and when the recalls take place and to discuss how we should get the message out to defeat every levy that comes down the pike? OR...taking Mike's wording... are we just going to sit around crying and talking about the beast? Anybody?

I'm all for the hunter and have sufficient knowledge to help scout the hunter to slay the beast Mike and Vet. I agree with your other posts, about what action should be taken. I'm for all of the above, and have several 'hunters' I know in Columbus vet who could slay this beast in many ways. I'm ready to lock and load, or pull the arrows out of the quiver, aim, and fire. The hunter would understand that meaning well. I know many episodes which relate to your point on the beast feasting upon the one---the beast targets its prey when hungry and angry, and uses many means of attack. But, the beast also makes many fatal mistakes which could be costly. There is power in numbers.

While purging some obsolete files in my computer’s hard drive last night, I happened across a composition from April 16 of 2009, that I had decided to “sleep on” before posting it on this blog, then I never again remembered to take action on. Ensuing events have made portions of it less relevant, but the “essence” of it seems to apply to what I feel has become an underlying theme of this thread:
Then again, I may be the only one who has felt this way.

Mike, I don't have enough or any knowledge of ethical violations rising to the levels you reference, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. Perhaps others do. The fact the police department allowed private attorney-client privileged conversations to be heard/ taped while in jail was a rather 'dark cloud' in the city and its reputation for undertaking actions which weren't quite proper was serious misconduct.
